New research from Sainsbury's Pet Insurance shows the average annual cost of
owning a dog is currently £1,183. If inflation and rising costs are taken into account, a puppy bought today could see
the annual cost of looking after it rise by around 20% to £1,418 during its life expectancy, which is on average 13
years. The average annual cost of owning a cat
is a slightly lower £1,028 but this could increase to an annual cost of £1,270 in 15 years' time - the average
life expectancy of a pet cat in the UK.
*10% of customers who purchased a new Asda Pet Insurance between January 2011 and September 2012 paid
this price or less.
